My Story

Posted by PingBad Dec. 6, 2007 @ 4:19 AM EST

I was 6 when I first got into computers (if you could count the Commodore 64 as a computer by today's standards). Since then, I knew what I wanted to do: code. And code I did. Originally starting on C64 Basic, I moved to Visual Basic 6 at age 13, and also into Active Server Pages 3 (some time later, I moved into PHP).

While coding in ASP and VB, I ran into a fair few hundred fellow online programmers on MSN's free online MSN Chat service - until it's closure - and soon built up a circle of friends with whom we could bounce ideas off (and they bounde ideas off me once in a while). When MSN decided to cut New Zealand out off their chat service offering on October 15 in 2003, I immediately joined the IRC scene, starting in IrCQNet's #newbies (I'd already known about IrCQNet from friends and family frequenting there often).

Starting as a newbie in the IRC scene myself, I quickly picked up the IRC command set, and also mIRC's scripting language soon becoming a regular helper. As time wore on, I was invited by friends to join other networks and explore IRC outside of IrCQNet - it wasn't long until I was offered an O:Line and soon became an IRC operator. About the same time, I came across SearchIRC and a few other IRC-related sites and in a moment of "why not, I'll join", became a regular on most (and known as a Post Whore on SearchIRC - a title I wear with honor).

A friend of mine once spammed a KillSomeTime link to a joke on IRC, and after doing the usual "no spamming" mantra, built up the courage to click it. Yeah, the joke was funny and I hung round KST for a while (running into works by IllWillPress and Ringfinger as I do). After laughing my ass off at some of the Foamy animations for some quite time, I found out IllWillPress himself had a website and I was yet again curious enough to have a look-see. Yep, a foamy fiesta awaited me... toons, desktop wallpapers, everything a just-arrived foamy fan would hope to find. For those wondering, it was IWP's "Find more foamy on Newgrounds" that convinced me to surf over to a site I'd heard and known about for some time (yet never really interested in, until this point). Even more foamy! awsome... think I, while I eat it up. I also surfed around other collections and find submissions by authors I'd previously met on KST - such as the Battlefield series by RingFinger, BunnyKill by Mottis, and a few others. In another "what the hell, why not" moment, I registered on NG, and haven't regretted it since.

Since joining NG, SearchIRC, and a few other registration-available sites over the years, I have met some amazing people, seen some kickass submissions, and basically loved doing what I do.
